Imagine a canvas portraying dots of white cotton and strands of golden hay around large swatches of Air Force blue and General Motors' greenbacks.

Such an abstract would summarize the colorful history of what now is touted as the most economically vital patch of land and development in the Southeast Valley.

Before the colors began fading into a rapidly changing landscape, they symbolized military, industrial research and agricultural entities that generated an annual economic impact of more than $500 million and 5,000 jobs.
