BRAC says no to OLF group

Opponents of a Navy outlying landing field proposed for Washington and Beaufort counties are accustomed to the occasional cold shoulder. But they got a particularly chilly reception Tuesday at a base realignment and closure hearing in Charlotte, where they found themselves banned from the speakers' list.

The list had been screened by U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole, R-N.C., whose constituents were among those prevented from speaking. Dole had set the agenda for the North Carolina portion of the hearing, which included West Virginia and South Carolina speakers.

"I'm not happy," said Beaufort County Commissioner Hood Richardson. "And I'm a Republican."

Richardson, as well as County Manager Paul Spruill and Washington County Manager David Peoples, had attended the hearing to argue the nearly $200 million cost of the project flies in the face of the BRAC process, which is designed to save the military money.
