Foolish to believe Airbus could save area after BRAC

During the recession of the early 1990s, the closure of Pease Air Force Base drove thousands of people from the area and millions of dollars from local schools, businesses and the Seacoast housing market.

Back then, there were those who, perhaps foolishly, believed Deutsche Airbus locating a plant at what was once the military airport would solve all our worries.

Now, more than a decade later, people - perhaps many who were not around when Pease closed, or maybe those same misguided souls - were again touting the possibility Airbus (owned by European Aeronautic Defense and Space Co. - EADS) would offset the impacts of the possible closure of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. As history has shown, it was a foolish idea 10-plus years ago and it was even more misguided when one area news source suggested it just a few days ago.
