Buffalo brownfield eyed by ECC for training facility

Erie Community College is preparing a SUNY 2020 Challenge Grant that would pave the way for a new workforce training center in a proposed East Side development park.

The Regional Workforce Training Center will already be supported by one source of state funds, the Buffalo Billion allocation. The center's goal will be to teach area residents the skills needed for today's manufacturers. It is viewed as a vital cog in the push to fill the regional skills gap, where unemployment and poverty are serious issues and yet manufacturers struggle to find qualified labor.

The proposed development park is also being supported by a Buffalo Billion funding package, totaling $6.7 million. The plan, called the Northland-Beltline Corridor, includes the creation of more than 50 acres of shovel-ready land that could be home to more than 700,000- square-feet of commercial space.
