Toxic legacy: Kaba should share in costs

Kaba Ilco Corp., which inherited a serious groundwater contamination issue on its Indiana Avenue property, should help the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system pay the large costs it’s incurring in confronting the part of that contamination deep beneath the campus of two of its middle schools.

Moving the students out of Hanes and Lowrance middle schools, as the school board voted to do earlier this month, could cost the school system more than $3 million over the next two years. And new air testing in the schools is costing around $85,000. Kaba should share in all those costs.

“Clearly, it would be the right thing to do for Kaba to help compensate for the costs,” Greensboro lawyer Bob King, hired by the school system to negotiate with Kaba, told the Journal’s Bertrand M. Gutierrez and Arika Herron.
