Springfield company monitoring homes, water for chemicals

A Springfield manufacturing firm continues to monitor nearby  
groundwater and air samples after finding traces of some chemicals in  
a few homes surrounding the factory as part of a lengthy cleanup effort.

Officials at Cascade Corp., a firm that makes attachments for fork  
and lift trucks, said they have continued to test a small cluster of  
homes outside the 2501 Sheridan Ave. facility for signs of vapor  
intrusion from a chemical called trichlotoethylene, or TCE. The  
company tested about 10 homes last spring and found no cause for  
concern.

But the company performed tests on a handful of additional homes on  
Reading and Mayfair drives this winter and discovered four homes in  
which the levels slightly exceeded Ohio Environmental Protection  
Agency guidelines, said Rodney Hickman, plant manager at Cascade.
