Moving students comes with heavy human, financial costs

With the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system in the midst of moving the students from two middle schools on a campus that has long sat on top of contaminated groundwater, we continue to question why the potential threat posed by the contamination wasn’t confronted years before.

Even if the results of new air testing on Hanes and Lowrance middle schools confirm the emphasis of some school officials that the schools are safe, the school board, out of an abundance of caution, has decided on the move and is executing it.

The move is hard on the students of both middle schools, whether they and their parents wanted the move or not. The students are leaving the Indiana Avenue schools they’re used to for ones they’re not.

And the move is expensive. It could cost nearly $4 million by the time renovations are made to other campuses to take in the transferred students, Arika Herron and Bertrand M. Gutierrez reported in Sunday’s Journal.
