Medical officer of health assures residents in area of former  
Outboard Marine plant that trichloroethylene levels were very low in  
test results

A chemical used at the city’s former Outboard Marine Corp. lingers in  
groundwater beneath nearby homes causing health concerns for  
residents, who were given an opportunity to ask questions at a public  
meeting Tuesday night.

Any level of exposure to trichloroethylene (TCE) causes a risk of  
cancer, but the levels recorded in recent testing inside some of the  
homes in the area are very low, Peterborough medical officer of  
health Dr. Rosana Pellizzari explained during the meeting.

Testing in 26 homes along Romaine and Brioux streets earlier this  
year found only three of the homes had TCE levels above 0.5  
micrograms per cubic metre and of those homes the highest level was  
2.58 micrograms per cubic metre, the Ministry of the Environment  
revealed.
