Air sampling begins at homes around site of former Outboard Marine plant
Trichloroethylene levels higher than expected

Crews from the Ministry of the Environment will be taking air samples  
from homes around the site of the former Outboard Marine plant just  
off Monaghan Rd., checking for traces of a chemical linked to cancer.

The TCE in the area came from Outboard Marine, according to the  
Peterborough County-City Health Unit's medical officer of health.

"We've known for some time that TCE was used there and is still  
present," said Dr. Rosana Pellizzari.

Groundwater plumes extending underground from the site as far south  
as Hamilton St. have carried traces of the chemical, and previous  
efforts to clean things up have included soil removal, pumping out  
contaminated water and a technique involving heat, Pellizzari said.
