Subject: | [CPEO-BIF] Long-Term Environmental Management at School and Daycare Sites |
Long-Term Environmental Management at School and Daycare Sites Lenny Siegel October, 2010Educational facilities, more than any other single land use, inspire public concern over exposure to hazardous substances. Yet from California to the New York islands, new schools and daycare centers are being constructed on or near toxic sites while more and more existing schools have been found to be threatened by existing toxic plumes. The technologies exist to eliminate toxic pathways - such as vapor intrusion - but strategies are only beginning to emerge to ensure that those technologies remain protective for the life of the underlying contamination. Particularly at schools or school sites with known or potential vapor intrusion, comprehensive site management plans are necessary to ensure that students and other building occupants are protected from toxic exposure.
