Michigan has always had a very liberal definition of brownfield-even
college dorms with asbestos or LBP qualified for funding. that's one
reason they ran out of money. Then again, if your definition of
brownfield includes "obsolescence".....

Ingham turning brownfields into energy efficient homes

LANSING - Record unemployment rates and a dire economy have left some 
Michigan industrial sites empty and contaminated with chemicals.

The Ingham County Brownfield Redevelopment Authority (ICBRA) and the 
Ingham County Land Bank, however, are using resources to turn 
once-undesirable locations into environmentally friendly homes.

"Given the housing situation, the ICBRA is critical," said Land Bank 
chair Eric Schertzing. "The Land Bank is only 3 years old. We've built 
or renovated a couple of dozen houses already."

He said the organizations are successful because the county widened the 
"brownfield parcel" concept.
