Subject: | [CPEO-BIF] Wyoming (MI) -- Brownfield tax incentives targeted to contaminated farmland |
Letter coincides with Cabela's tax talk delay Chronicle News Service Saturday November 24, 2007 WYOMING, MI -- When the chairman of the Kent County Board of Commissioners sends a memo, people react. At least, that's how it seemed this week when the Wyoming City Council pulled from its agenda an item related to tax incentives for a Cabela's development in Walker. ...Still, a letter sent this week by Roger Morgan as part of a council hearing expresses the county's concern about a proposed amendment to Wyoming's Brownfield plan. The city this summer struck a deal with Walker to put 302 acres at Int. 96 and Walker Avenue NW temporarily under Wyoming's jurisdiction to leverage special tax financing. ,,,The plan would redirect more than $100 million in local, school and state taxes to fund cleanup and redevelopment of the former apple orchard. "What is not at all clear to me is, what benefit will be derived by the residents of Kent County as a return on investment for the ... property tax levies to be diverted to underwriting developer costs for this project?" Morgan wrote.
