If a property remains vacant because of environmental
concerns, then it is a brownfields site. Something as simple
as an evironmental assessment can clear the property of
concerns (if it is clean), and clear it of faulty perceptions-
this action can bring a new use where there was none. Is it
a redevelopment? Not if there was no new costruction. Is it
a brownfields site? The very definition of one. This speaks
to the multitude of gas station sites I see where all the
neighbors know it is the superfund site on the corner.

[This article raises a question that I've been wondering
about lately,
based upon site visits in New York state. To what degree is
the reuse of
a factory building, by a new owner, a brownfield
redevelopment? Anyone
have an answer? - LS]

Community benefits from new business

It took a long time, but the former Ironsides Battery
brownfield site
has found new life.

And county officials — who had been trying to sell the
property for more
than a decade — are breathing a sigh of relief.

It's exciting to see West Bend Machine Works in the former
battery
factory — a brownfield site that was reclaimed by Fond du
Lac County,
said Brenda Hicks-Sorensen, president of the Fond du Lac
County Economic
Development Corporation. The property had been vacant since
1990.

The FCEDC helped Fond du Lac County market the building.
West Bend
Machine Works purchased the property in October 2006 for
$119,000.
