[This article raises a question that I've been wondering about lately, based upon site visits in New York state. To what degree is the reuse of a factory building, by a new owner, a brownfield redevelopment? Anyone have an answer? - LS]

It took a long time, but the former Ironsides Battery brownfield site has found new life.

And county officials — who had been trying to sell the property for more than a decade — are breathing a sigh of relief.

It's exciting to see West Bend Machine Works in the former battery factory — a brownfield site that was reclaimed by Fond du Lac County, said Brenda Hicks-Sorensen, president of the Fond du Lac County Economic Development Corporation. The property had been vacant since 1990.

The FCEDC helped Fond du Lac County market the building. West Bend Machine Works purchased the property in October 2006 for $119,000.
