Subject: | [CPEO-BIF] NYC community boards may be given funds for BF pollution probes |
Boards look to dig into brownfields BY JOTHAM SEDERSTROM DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER Monday, July 30th 2007 The city's 59 community boards could be given unprecedented access to millions in state funding under new legislation awaiting Gov. Spitzer's signature. The bill, which was approved by the Senate and Assembly in June, would revise a state law to include community boards as among the groups eligible for grant money to study areas in all five boroughs affected by brownfield pollution. "This is extremely important because the community boards are the first place where land use is discussed and decisions are made at the community level," said state Sen. Velmanette Montgomery (D-Fort Greene), who with Assemblywoman Joan Millman (D-Cobble Hill) drafted the initial legislation in 2005. Until now, only city agencies - such as the Department of Transportation or Department of Buildings, for example - were eligible to apply for the state planning grants.
