More homes could be affected by plume of contaminated groundwaterEPA keeping close watch on plume that may cause harmful vapors to seep into basements.
By Steve Bennish Dayton Daily News (OH) February 9, 2007DAYTON - A plume of contaminated groundwater that is threatening the health of residents near the Behr Dayton Thermal Products plant will take some time to fully evaluate, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency told about 80 who attended a public meeting Thursday evening.
Also at the meeting were representatives from DaimlerChrysler, the former owner of the plant at 1600 Webster St., the Ohio EPA and Ohio Department of Health.
It's not known how serious the health impact could be from trichloroethylene, a chemical used as a degreaser, according to the Ohio Department of Health. Robert Frey, chief of the Health Assessment Unit for the department, said that although the levels of the chemical in area homes are higher than any he's ever seen, they're still below levels observed in industrial workplaces and known to have harmed the health of workers there.
