The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) is pointing people towards a new campaign aimed at saving urban gardens from the clutches of developers. Following changes to the planning law in 2000, gardens have been defined as brownfield sites, which means that developers are able to acquire houses with large gardens and put in planning applications to build on them or tarmac over them, the organisation said. The organisation has pointed keen garden conservationists in the direction of the Save Our Gardens campaign run by charity Garden Organic. According to Garden Organic, even if local people and the council deny planning permission to a 'garden grabbing' scheme, it can be approved by planning inspectors if it helps to meet developers' "new housing" and "building on brownfield sites" targets. The organisation is campaigning for gardens to be removed from the definition of brownfield sites, claiming that gardens fulfil a range of important functions for the community and the environment.
