Concerns of waste product TCE hover around Cortlandville

Smith Corona left the Cortland area in the '90s, but the company is making news again. According to the state's Department of Conservation, the company that manufactured typewriters and calculators used the cleaning chemical TCE.


"When it was dumped by Smith Corona, a lot of old plants did this, they dumped it into the ground, or they had sump pumps they dumped it into. It gets into the soil and percolates down and winds up in ground water," said Diane Carleton, of NYSDEC Public Affairs.

The areas shaded in blue will continue to be monitored by the DEC, while homeowners in the yellow have higher concentrations of TCE and are recommended to use a mitigation system to rid the chemical.
