Where did Boise Foothills’ unexploded munitions come from? Who’s cleaning them up? By Matan Josephy Idaho Statesman July 21, 2026 Firefighters facing off against the Claremont Fire recently had to contend with an unexpected new risk: decades-old unexploded military munitions scattered throughout the Boise Foothills. But where did these munitions come from? How long have they been there? And why haven’t they been cleaned up? The heat set off by the fire — which has burned some 6,800 acres — led the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to worry that the munitions could suddenly explode, according to corps spokesperson Leanne Langeberg.
