U.S. Air Force 97% finished with Griffiss contamination cleanup in Rome

ROME — After three decades of cleanup efforts, Air Force officials say they are roughly 97% complete in clearing the former Griffiss Air Force Base of contaminants — though the work may never be 100% finished.

Air Force representative David Farnsworth and other officials held an open house at the Griffiss International Airport Wednesday night to update the residents of Rome on the ongoing cleanup efforts. Farnsworth said work has been ongoing since before the former base closed in the 1990s.

“We have an obligation, since it was used and released by the Air Force, to address that and respond to it,” said Farnsworth of the chemicals in the soil and groundwater.
