Clean up of contamination associated with former Air Force Base on airport grounds progressing Salina Post (KS) March 13, 2026 Efforts to clean up contamination on the Salina airport, which was left over when the former Schilling Air Force Base was established is progressing. According to the airport, the Salina Public Entities is working in coordination with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), is making progress on environmental remediation efforts associated with the former Schilling Air Force Base. The cleanup effort is a long-term project that includes multiple phases and a variety of remediation methods designed to address historical contamination in soil and groundwater.
