Additional $40.5M committed to nuclear waste cleanup in Coldwater Creek By Lauren Brennecke Spectrum News (St. Louis, MO) December 3, 2025 ST. LOUIS—The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has committed an additional $40.5 million to clean up nuclear waste leftover from the Manhattan Project in Coldwater Creek, Senator Josh Hawley said in a social media post Wednesday. A study published earlier this year found that living near Coldwater Creek as a child in the 1950s and 1960s was associated with an increased risk of overall cancer as well as a higher incidence of cancers linked to radiation. The funding comes from a settlement between the Corps and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The Corps will use it to continue work at Coldwater Creek, which was originally expected to wrap in 2037. But local advocates say the new funding was more than they expected, meaning cleanup could happen sooner. “It feels like Christmas morning,” said Dawn Chapman, co-founder of Just Moms STL. “That money… I can visualize where it's going to go, as a community where it needs to go.” … For the entire article, see https://spectrumlocalnews.com/mo/st-louis/news/2025/12/03/coldwater-creek-40-million — Lenny Siegel Executive Director Center for Public Environmental Oversight A project of the Pacific Studies Center LSiegel@cpeo.org P.O.
