Frustrations with Army Corps of Engineers surface at Buxton RAB meeting

Meeting at the Cape Hatteras Anglers Club in Buxton on July 17, Buxton RAB (Restoration Advisory Board) members were clearly frustrated at what they say is a lack of communication from the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) about the cleanup of contaminants at the old Naval facility.

“We’ve got this process, but…we have no knowledge of what that process involved,” RAB Board Member Lat Williams told representatives of the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) at the meeting.

The Buxton RAB was created in December 2024 to address community concerns about the cleanup of a former Naval base that had been used to listen for underwater activity.  The USACE has the responsibility for cleaning the site based on the Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) Act of 1986.
