The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is on a fast track to change a fundamental concept of the health effects of ionizing radiation - the Linear No Threshold model, which says that all exposure to ionizing radiation has health risks.
The actions underway are an effort to significantly relax exposure standards for both nuclear workers and the general public, allowing acceptance of much greater exposure. Such changes would lead to more harm to human health AND undercut current clean up requirements of radioactive contamination, reduce or eliminate monitoring of radiation exposure, and allow for much more radioactive contamination of our environment.
If at all possible, please register for this NRC meeting to show that there is great concern about these dangerous plans. There will be presentations by the NRC, stakeholders, and in the last hour of the meeting, an opportunity for 2 minute comments by the general public. Even if you don't make a comment (see below re: making email comments), registering and attending this meeting shows that there is strong opposition to these hasty and ill advised changes.
The Beyond Nuclear announcement below provides links for registration, some background information, and meeting details.
Thank you for your efforts to protect our genome.
Sincerely,
Alfred Meyer

PLEASE COMMENT
Wednesday July 16, 1-5:30 PM ET

Tell the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), at their public meeting on July 16, 1-5:30 PM ET, that science demonstrates radiation exposure is always harmful. Registration required. The NRC is taking comments on Trump Executive Order (EO) 14300 Section 5(b), which directs the NRC to “reconsider” its use of the linear no threshold (LNT) model (starting page 2). NRC views this as an “opportunity” to “enable the nation’s use of nuclear power.” The LNT holds that radiation damage increases with increasing exposures, and that harm is posed by all radiation exposure no matter how small. Comments are 2 minutes long and will come at the end of the meeting (see schedule page 3).
