Crews address environmental concerns after dismantling contaminated plant at N.Y. nuclear site

WEST VALLEY N.Y. — A black tarp is all that's left atop the site where cleanup crews recently completed phase one on the full takedown of a five-story, 35,000-square-foot nuclear reprocessing plant at the West Valley Demonstration Project in Cattaraugus County.

Demolition started in 2022 on the site that operated from 1966 to 1972, and was used to recover reusable plutonium and uranium from spent or no longer usable nuclear reactor fuel.

"It was a huge building, the most contaminated building in the site, the largest building in the site. One of the most contaminated buildings in the country," said Bryan Bower, director, West Valley Demonstration Project.
Project leaders say the nuclear waste generated from the main plant was safely shipped to licensed disposal facilities out west.

Yet, they still need to find a way to properly dispose of high-level waste they say are safely stored inside more than 50 concrete casks, or tanks, on site since about 2016.
