Navy testing private wells near former Millington base for toxic ‘forever chemicals’

MILLINGTON, Tenn. - The U.S. Navy is offering free water testing to homeowners near the former Naval Air Station Memphis after discovering elevated levels of toxic “forever chemicals” in shallow groundwater.

The chemicals, known as PFAS — short for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — were detected at six sites on the former base property. The levels found exceeded new federal limits set by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Rhonda O’Dell, a Millington resident and Marine veteran who served on the base, said the findings raise new questions about her own health. She said she was hospitalized multiple times for severe stomach issues while stationed there, but doctors were never able to determine the cause.
