Westfield Mayor Brian Sullivan says it will be at least 2 years before Department of Defense could admit responsibility for water contamination

WESTFIELD - It will be be at least two more years before the city could recoup any funds related to bringing the city's contaminated wells back online, Mayor Brian P. Sullivan told the City Council Thursday.

The city has determined wells 2, 7 and 8 were contaminated with PFOS and PFAS from firefighting foam used at the Air National Guard's 104th Fighter Wing at Barnes Regional Airport. The city has filed claims against the U.S. Department of Defense and three manufacturers of the foam.

Sullivan said the Defense Department has not accepted that it caused the contamination of the wells, which supply most of the water to the city's North Side. Instead, Sullivan said, there is "continued repeated refusal to accept responsibility."
