Unexploded shells may be under Nantucket land By Peter Sutters Cape Cod Times (MA) June 27, 2018 NANTUCKET - Dozens of Madaket homeowners have received a letter from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers alerting them of potential unexploded ordnance on or under their properties. The June 8 letter says the area, roughly from the west shore of Clarks Cove to the east shore of Long Pond, was used as an aerial and land rocket range in the mid- to late 1940s. “Available information indicates military munitions may be present on or near your property as a result of past munitions-related activities that the Department of Defense conducted on this Formerly Used Defense Sites property,” the letter reads. “It’s got to be a real eye-opener to all the workers who have been digging foundations or septic systems out here,” said Bill Grieder, a longtime Madaket resident and president of the Madaket Conservation Association.
