Newburgh residents wary of filtered water

CITY OF NEWBURGH - In February 2017, as contractors worked on a new water filtration system that will allow Newburgh to resume drawing water from its contaminated primary drinking water supply, state officials announced the full activation of a similar system in the upstate Village of Hoosick Falls.

Catherine Dawson was among the village residents told that their tap water was now safe to drink. Nearly a year later her “jittery” family is still using a cooler that dispenses water from five-gallon jugs.

“We just don’t trust it,” Dawson said of the municipal water. “There’s too many variables that can happen with it.”

It is a distrust shared by Newburgh residents, who were startled when the city announced in May 2016 that the water they used for cooking and drinking was contaminated with perfluorooctane sulfonate, a toxic chemical linked with kidney and testicular cancers, ulcerative colitis, low birth weight and other maladies.
