Wurtsmith water a health concern feds need to take more seriously

Dozens of families who live near the former Wurtsmith Air Force Base in Oscoda are unable to use the water that flows from the taps in their homes, and the federal government – which caused the problem – doesn’t seem to care.

The problem stems from perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) in firefighting foam used by the Air Force from the 1970s until the base closed in 1993. The PFCs contaminated groundwater near the base and spread into private water wells and the Au Sable River, causing health officials to issue warnings for residents not to drink their water and a “do not eat” advisory for all non-migratory fish caught in the area south of the former Air Force base.

This is a serious public health and safety issue caused by the federal government, and it’s time for federal officials to step up and make things right. Families who live near the base deserve reliable access to clean water that is safe for drinking and cooking.
