Army pulls out of Badger area water agreement

TOWN OF MERRIMAC – The U.S. Army is backing out of its agreement to build an estimated $20 million public drinking water system to protect private well owners from possible groundwater contamination from the former Badger Army Ammunition Plant.

In a letter to U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin dated April 7, J. Randall Robinson, acting assistant secretary of the Army, stated after a review of the proposed construction and operation of a drinking water system near the former ammunition plant that Army representatives “acted prematurely and beyond their area of authority. As a result, providing a drinking water system would be inconsistent with our authority under the Defense Environmental Restoration Program.”

Town of Merrimac officials and local residents began questioning whether the Army would stand by its agreement in January when the Army said the situation would require a “comprehensive review.”
