Few detailed answers from agencies on potential joint base water contamination

State and federal regulators are offering few specifics in their responses to inquiries about potential past drinking water contamination at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst.

The inquiries and responses follow an early April investigative report by this news organization showing that joint base personnel and residents may have been exposed to chemicals in their drinking water over the last decade.

The base is investigating the spread of unregulated chemicals perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfanate (PFOS), which were key ingredients in firefighting foams used for decades at military bases across the country. Recent studies have shown the chemicals could harm people's health, prompting the joint base and other facilities to test drinking water supplies and the environment.
