12:00 PM ET (9:00 AM PT) Join SERDP and ESTCP on Thursday, February 25 for two presentations highlighting Department of Defense (DoD) efforts to develop technologies to detect, classify and remediate munitions found at underwater sites. Dr. Aubrey España and Dr. Tim Marston from the Applied Physics Laboratory at the University of Washington) will first outline the key steps underlying the process of trying to detect and classify underwater munitions followed by two technical presentations. Dr. Marston will then discuss the acquisition of raw acoustic sonar data, current models that simulate it, and processing tools that are used to reduce the raw data to “data products.” Dr. España will conclude with a discussion of current efforts towards using data products to train and test classification algorithms, how to estimate the performance of these algorithms, and recent efforts to use model results to optimize sonar performance. First, Ms. Julia Russell and Ms. Brenna Lynn Skelley from the Naval Air Systems Command will discuss findings from an ESTCP project to establish application needs and target laboratory assessments and field tests needed to provide sufficient data to make implementation decisions for new non-chromated primers. Second, Mr. Michael Spicer from the U.S. Air Force Coatings Technology and Integration Office will provide an overview of the Air Force’s efforts to transition from chromate containing corrosion protection systems.
