Air Force to hold meeting about Moose Creek water contamination

FAIRBANKS - The Air Force has scheduled a third public meeting to address groundwater contamination in the Moose Creek Subdivision.

Granular activated carbon filters will be the meeting's main topic, according to Lt. Elias Zani, an information officer at Eielson Air Force Base. Zani said the filtration system originally being looked at won't fit a large number of houses, so different options are being explored.

Previously used in firefighting foams, perfluorooctane sulfonate from Eielson has pushed 132 Moose Creek wells, serving more than 200 residences, above a health advisory level set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Forty-six wells tested above the level in mid-July. The advisory is 0.2 micrograms per liter, or 0.2 parts per billion.
