Cleanup of Kirtland Air Force Base fuel spill underway

Don’t worry about the Air Force meeting the June 30 deadline for extracting water contaminated by the Kirtland Air Force Base fuel spill.

The cleanup project’s first extraction well started pulling water tainted by the spill out of the ground June 4, representatives of the Air Force and the New Mexico Environment Department said recently.

Adria Bodour, the Air Force’s lead scientist on the project, said 62,000 gallons of water have been pumped out by the extraction well in the west parking lot of Christ United Methodist Church at 6200 Gibson Blvd. SE.

The start of extraction is a huge step for a project that has been more than 15 years in the making and that, after a slow start, has made giant strides in the last year.
