Board of Water Supply sounds alarm over Red Hill by Andrew Pereira KITV TV-4 News (Honolulu, HI) June 12, 2015HONOLULU - Honolulu Board of Water Supply Manager and Chief Engineer Ernie Lau sent a letter to all 170,000 customers on Oahu this week, saying drinking water remains safe, but to pay close attention to the situation at the Navy’s Red Hill fuel storage facility.
"The BWS is testing its wells in the area and wants to assure our customers that our water is safe to drink," Lau wrote in bold letters. "However, Navy studies show that fuel leaks from the Red Hill tanks have occurred in the past, and the groundwater underneath the tanks are already contaminated with fuel."
The Navy has proposed a settlement with the state and the Environmental Protection Agency through an Administrative Order on Consent, or AOC, that also includes a Statement of Work, or SOW. In an interview with KITV4, Lau said everyone on Oahu should familiarize themselves with the issues at Red Hill, and if need be, submit comments to the EPA by July 1.
