Air Force to test Moose Creek wells for groundwater contamination By Sam Friedman Fairbanks News Miner (AK) May 22, 2015FAIRBANKS - Eielson Air Force Base will test private wells in the Moose Creek area for contamination from two potentially toxic compounds, after traces of a firefighting chemical were found in test wells along the northern edge of the base.
The decision announced this week follows a March move on base to change the source of drinking water because of the contamination from perfluorinated compounds, often known as PFCs. The contamination is now believed to extend to the north of the base, said Eric Breitenberger, an environmental program specialist for the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation.
"We're finding a fair bit of it. I think everybody was surprised by that. I think we were a bit surprised by how many drinking water supply wells had PFOS (a type of PFC). It's to the Air Force's credit that they took that precautionary measure," he said.
