At Federal City in Algiers, Navy fence line comes down three years
after base closed
by Paul Purpura New Orleans Times-Picayune September 15, 2014Three years after the U.S. Navy closed its base in New Orleans, a portion of the perimeter fencing at the Algiers part of the installation is coming down. The shuttered Naval Support Activity, which for decades was fenced off from the public, is opening up, giving pedestrians free access to the Federal City site and motorists a third entry point.
The Navy closed the base Sept. 15, 2011, the result of the military's Base Realignment and Closure Round six years earlier. On that day, sailors saluted as the United States flag was lowered a last time before they left their posts.
The public has had access ever since. However, the perimeter chain- link fence, topped with barbed wire and razor wire and made of heavy- gauge posts reinforced with a ¾-inch steel cable designed at least slow cars, remained. The Algiers Development District, which now owns 114 acres of the former Navy base for conversion into the Federal City, has wanted to remove the fence to give the campus a more inviting appearance.
