DOE officials to visit Piketon cleanup site

PIKETON - An awaited breakthrough in the effort to bridge a funding gap in cleanup work at the former gaseous diffusion plant in Piketon has been made – but whether it will mean anything has yet to be seen.

U.S. Sen. Rob Portman will welcome Mark Whitney, Department of Energy Acting Assistant Secretary for Environmental Management, and David Foster, a senior adviser to energy secretary Ernest Moniz, to Piketon Thursday to meet with local elected officials, union representatives and the board of the Southern Ohio Diversification Initiative to discuss the future of the cleanup work. During the meetings, Portman is expecting an update on the Obama administration’s stance with regard to bridging a $110 million funding gap for the decontamination and decommissioning work on the former Cold War-era enrichment facility.

Continued funding for the project is a two-fold concern for area residents and officials. In the short-term, hundreds of jobs are at stake. In the longer term, use of the site for future economic development projects and job creation is not possible unless cleanup work is completed.
