Barrier between fire and nuclear waste at West Lake Landfill is delayed By Blythe Bernhard St. Louis Post-Dispatch (MO) July 22, 2014Construction on a barrier between an underground fire at the Bridgeton Landfill and radioactive materials in the adjacent West Lake Landfill has been delayed, and federal lawmakers are asking why.
"We remain concerned by the lack of a clear timeline for completion of the proposed isolation barrier," reads a recent letter to the Environmental Protection Agency signed by Sens. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., and Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., and Reps. William Lacy Clay, D-St. Louis, and Ann Wagner, R-Ballwin.
Karl Brooks, regional administrator for the EPA, said in February that construction on the dirt-filled trench "should begin soon." The EPA then announced in March that construction would start within 90 days, or by the end of June. The Army Corps of Engineers has been tapped to help the EPA with the project aimed at keeping the fire from spreading. "Their professionals are working closely with us to ensure the final decision on the isolation barrier is comprehensive," said EPA spokesman Curtis Carey.
