New Mexico leak may delay waste shipments from SRS By Derrek Asberry Aiken Standard March 4, 2014Savannah River Site officials said options for the Site's transuranic – or TRU – waste program are being evaluated after the waste's anticipated destination underwent a recent radioactive leak.
The Site's TRU waste program includes solid waste consisting of clothing, tools, rags, residues, debris and other items contaminated with plutonium. In 2001, SRS began shipping over 10,000 cubic meters of TRU waste to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant - or WIPP - in Carlsbad, New Mexico.
Operations at the WIPP are currently on hold after 13 workers were recently exposed to radiation.
