Presidio board kicks back Lucas plan - with force

The board that oversees the Presidio kicked back all three proposals Thursday for a cultural center across from Crissy Field - and expressed particular reservations about a plan offered by "Star Wars" filmmaker George Lucas.

The Presidio Trust Board's action requesting revisions in the proposals virtually ensures that its decision over whether to install Lucas' visual art museum, a sustainability institute, a conservancy center or something else at the prominent park location won't be made soon.

The trust was complimentary about each plan in its statement announcing the request for changes. But in a meeting with The Chronicle's editorial board, board Chairwoman Nancy Bechtle was pointed about the Lucas project.

The proposed 93,000-square-foot Lucas Cultural Arts Museum for visual art, as presented, is an "inappropriate configuration" and "too big," Bechtle said.
