Kirtland pumps water for testing By John Fleck Albuquerque Journal (NM) October 30, 2013Air Force contractors turned on a pump Wednesday to begin sucking 70,000 gallons of contaminated water from 485 feet beneath the ground in southeast Albuquerque. Officials looked on as the water, contaminated by a decades-old Kirtland Air Force Base fuel spill, was pumped across a parking lot to a treatment system and storage tanks.
Relative to the size of the spill, the amount of water involved in Wednesday’s test was small. But to the local, state and federal officials who gathered for a midday news conference to mark the event, the pumping marked a detente in the sometimes tense relationship in recent years over the spill and the risk to the groundwater that has resulted.
"It does mark the first time that we are actually pumping fuel from underground," said New Mexico Environment Secretary Ryan Flynn.
