Fuel leak ‘Plan B’ not that simple By John Fleck Albuquerque Journal (NM) July 16, 2013Mark Evans, a scientist with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, makes Kirtland Air Force Base’s groundwater contamination problems sound remarkably easy to deal with.
Millions of gallons of aviation fuel that leaked from an underground fuel pipe over about four decades has not reached drinking water wells, Evans found in a study unveiled Friday at a meeting of the city-county Water Protection Advisory Board.
Efforts are underway to halt the contamination’s spread, Evans noted. And if the efforts fail (and they’re not currently going terribly well, as I’ll explain later), and the fuel eventually does reach drinking water supply wells? Protecting public health would be simple, Evans said. Just shut down the wells.
