Public not told parts of Magnuson Park tainted

A public meeting about a proposed contamination cleanup at Magnuson Park erupted into a shouting match Wednesday night.

Seattle Times staff reporterThe Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation discovered radiological contamination in Magnuson Park in 2009 and fenced off the area but did not publicly announce the problem, officials acknowledged in an unusual public meeting Wednesday night.

The officials, from the parks department, the U.S. Navy, and the state Department of Ecology, said they did not notify the public because the low-level contamination presents no threat as long as nobody enters the fenced-off area.

Nevertheless, the Navy is planning a $9 million “time-critical” cleanup operation - a process with an accelerated timeline and less public input that is normally reserved for projects with major safety concerns - of several areas near a popular gym run by Arena Sports.
