Freetown soil board issues quarry blasting permit after favorable water contamination report

FREETOWN - The Soil Conservation Board on Monday issued a blasting permit to Cape Cod Aggregates’ quarry operation on Bryant Street. The permit will expire in December.

This came after a study in which the state Department of Environmental Protection tested 23 nearby wells for perchlorate counts, according to a presentation from state DEP representative Gerard Martin. A high perchlorate count can impact thyroid health and is a health risk to children under 12 and pregnant women.

Martin said the DEP tested the groundwater and water flow. The study was prompted by concerned residents; some blasting operations use petroleum, which can affect perchlorate levels.
