Cook proposes Johnson Valley compromise Jim E. Winburn Victorville Daily Press (CA) April 19, 2013VICTORVILLE - Rep. Paul Cook (R-Yucca Valley) proposed a plan Friday to stop the westward expansion of the Twentynine Palms Marine base into Johnson Valley by federally designating the area.
The Yucca Valley congressman and retired U.S. Marine Corps colonel said his plan would create the Johnson Valley National Off-Highway Vehicle Recreation Area, which would keep the land under the authority of the Bureau of Land Management.
Cook said he understood the importance of training exercises for the country's national defense, but he would have to put the safety of the public first.
