Fort Detrick to drill wells on Frederick County-owned land to test for contamination

Fort Detrick will begin drilling wells and testing the groundwater on several Frederick County-owned properties as part of its ongoing efforts to clean up chemical and biological contamination.

The Frederick Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday to allow Fort Detrick access to 88 acres of land in the area of Montevue Lane and Rosemont Avenue. The area is between the main Army base and Area B, the 400-acre piece of property the Army used to dispose of chemical, biological and radiological materials from the 1940s until 1970.

The Frederick County Health Department, the county-owned Montevue Assisted Living and Frederick County Animal Control are located on Montevue Lane.

“This is a very important piece of property to us,” said Gary Zolyak, environmental attorney for Fort Detrick, in an interview Wednesday. “We're not expecting any contamination, but we want to know if there is contamination making its way from Area B.”
