Spokane Tribe responds to STEP criticismMembers claim politics and not business is what’s driving project’s opposition
By JAMES EIK Cheney Free Press (WA) November 29, 2011Last Wednesday, members involved in the Spokane Tribe Economic Project (STEP) addressed criticism of the proposed project, saying much of the opposition is based in politics, not business.
Representatives highlighted the number of jobs that would be created by the STEP project, and their emphasis on making sure the project is completed with local materials and workers to help reduce unemployment numbers on the West Plains.
Mike Spencer, Spokane Tribal Business Council vice president, said the Spokane Tribe is currently experiencing 52 percent unemployment. Airway Heights also has 34.5 percent unemployment.
