EDISON - Although no one ever has suffered illness or injury at the many sites that make up the former Raritan Arsenal, the federal government will spend about $50 million over the next several years to find and clean up chemicals and weapons, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

During a meeting on Wednesday in the township’s municipal complex, Army Corps representatives went over plans and recent accomplishments at the 3,200-acre site, now home to Raritan Center, Heller Industrial Park, Middlesex County College, Thomas Edison County Park, a nursery school, townhouses and buildings operated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

After an inert bomb was discovered on Oct. 13 during a parking lot excavation at a distribution center for the AriZona Beverage Co. in Raritan Center, taxpayers expressed relief about yet another mining for undiscovered munitions.
